Sorbitol and oleic acid are esterified to produce Sorbitan Trioleate, a nonionic surfactant. It is an amber-colored, viscous liquid with superior stabilizing, dispersing, and emulsifying qualities. It is commonly referred to as Span 85 and, when combined with other surfactants, becomes dispersible in water but soluble in oils. In food, medicine, cosmetics, and industrial applications, sorbitan trioleate is frequently used as an emulsifier, stabilizer, or defoaming agent. It facilitates the formation of stable water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions. It improves the performance and consistency of coatings, lubricants, agrochemicals, and fabrics. It is used in formulations that are environmentally friendly due to its non-toxic and biodegradable nature.
